Honoring A Gentleman
Last month I had the great honor of inducting Jay Wertheimer into the Association of Independent Corrugated Converters (AICC)/Paperboard Packaging Hall of Fame.
The Driving Force
At the conclusion of a recent seminar in which I had participated, an attendee asked me if there was one thing I could tell him to do that would assure his success as a salesperson.
Haste Makes Waste? Maybe Not Any Longer
In the same way that our cars take longer to stop when we go faster, today's high-speed conversion lines have the potential to create a lot more waste than their predecessors when something goes wrong.

Making It Matter
Jay Wertheimer, who was well-known for his "new normal" message to the corrugated container industry, was inducted into the Association of Independent Corrugated Converters (AICC)/Paperboard Packaging Hall of Fame last month at the AICC's Fall Meeting in Chicago. His rallying cry for manufacturing in America during the difficult post-9/11 economic times characterized his devotion to the industry.

Montague Reaches Out
On Oct. 1, Larry Montague was named president of TAPPI after a six-month comprehensive search by TAPPI's board of directors for a person with proven industry experience and sales and marketing expertise. Montague has big plans for the association that has strained to find its place in the current paper industry.
Eastern European Box Making: Maturing Very Quickly Now
Where's the best place to build a corrugated box plant today and make a profit? China might be your first response. Its overall growth rate is impressive. But what about Eastern Europe? When communist rule collapsed in 1989-90, business opportunities for Western European companies (and beyond) materialized quickly. Then the eight former communist countries joined the European Union in May 2004 and foreign direct investment exploded. This year it will hit approximately $25.3 billion, according to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
